James C. Ray Light Sport – Airplane Scholarship

Purpose:

This scholarship provides a positive, life changing opportunity for young individuals to be molded into stronger, more successful people by developing self-discipline and self-confidence through flight training.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants seeking grants from the Scholarship Fund will be evaluated on many factors, including, (but not limited to) GPA, community service history, extracurricular activities and personal recommendations from teachers and employers, and a personal interview during the application process. Eligible students must be a Polk County Public or Private High School Student or equivalent home schooled student residing in Polk County. A key element of the application is a short, thoughtful essay about the applicant, his/her career aspirations and the reason(s) for pursuing flight training. Value:

The Certificate Scholarship will provide scholarship funding to pay 90% of the expenses, up to the limits specified, incurred in the training that remains to complete the FAA airmen certificate being sought. Maximum Award of $3,000.

Application Submission Process and Completion Date:

Applications will be accumulated during each calendar quarter, and reviewed by the selection committee during the following month.

Selection Process:

  • A Solo Scholarship must be completed before the corresponding Certificate Scholarship will be awarded.
  • Submit an updated application along with a brief essay describing the training through solo experience.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

History/Background:

The James C. Ray Flight Training Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support for flight training to Polk County Public and Private High School Students and equivalent home schooled students residing in Polk County.  Mr. Ray believes the disciplines he obtained during flight training truly helped him become the successful individual he is today. With the hope that other young people might benefit from this same type of activity and the positive, life-changing opportunities it presents.  The self-discipline required – and self-confidence developed – during the flight training experience will help mold a stronger, more successful individual.
