ACP396 What Is Affecting Pilot Hiring In 2024?

It is now July 2024, and we have been in a hiring slowdown for more than half a year and it is deepening. In January I Discussed 12 Actions To Take During A Hiring Slowdown this year but I also wanted to add some more color to that episode.

Since that episode, we started a group coaching mastermind where we give industry updates on a monthly basis along with an inspirational message, informational topic, and a question and answer session. In today’s episode, I am going to replay the industry update section of the March mastermind group because I think it would be helpful for you to understand the current hiring environment.

If you are interested in joining the mastermind group coaching you can try it for one month for free using the coupon code “CoachItForward” I think it is very helpful and is a nice addition to our on-one coaching because it keeps you inspired, informed, and motivated. Hi Carl,

I appreciate the topics you bring to us through YouTube and enjoy hearing your voice on all aviation topics. The reason for my message today, the pilot community needs you to discuss the pilot shortage in the USA for 2024 and 2025.

New pilots are concerned about the hiring slowdown. Especially those still training or who are building their hours towards ATP.

I know there is a video about this topic on your channel but things are changing rapidly and we would love to hear your opinion. Many low-time pilot groups on Facebook are having conversations concerning whether we will have a job after we get our Airline Transport Pilot minimums.

Are we heading to those days working for $20 an hour as first officer for regionals? A lot of news is coming out about airliners slowing down hiring for 2024, and many pilots with ATP are struggling to get a job now. We would like to hear from you as a low-time pilot community.

Thank you

Talking Points:

  1. I understand your concern but you can’t predict the hiring market the day you get your 1500 hours, but we do have a good outlook for the future for pilot hiring in general.

ACP212 Increase In Terminations – An Unintended Consequence of the Pilot Shortage

Increase in terminations: an unintended consequence of the pilot shortage. Welcome to the inspirational, informational, and transparent aviation careers podcast. If you have a questions please email us at feeback@aviationcareerspodcast.com.

Today I purposely do not have a guest becausepilot shortage I want to talk to you about a sensitive subject. In the past year I have been working with many pilots, recruiters, and airline instructors who have been frustrated by the current pilot shortage. Pilots are frustrated because they are being terminated in higher numbers. Recruiters are frustrated because they cannot find FAA Qualified applicants and even when they find an applicant they may not be a competent pilot or they may not be a good fit for the airline. Instructors are frustrated because of the lack of competence and perception that the student cannot be terminated. Let’s talk about all of these issues and offer some solutions.

Before we begin I have a few announcements.

In This Episode We Discuss (Increased Terminations and Pilot Shortage):

  • The problem: Why pilot terminations are on the rise.
  • AviationCareersPodcast.com/pilotshortage.
  • This is not a new problem.
  • How pilots can avoid termination.
  • Minimum Qualifications vs Competency.
  • Get Training prior to going to the airline.
  • Show up on time.
  • Captains: mentor the First Officer – cell phone usage, checklists, attitude.
  • Be careful how you mentor. Professional standards at most airlines is a great tool.
  • You cannot say and do anything you want on social media and in public. You are now an ambassador for the airline.
  • Realize you are not entitled to a job you must earn it.

Advice for the challenges of recruiting.

  • Define and sell all the benefits.
  • Discuss challenges of the job along with benefits. Both are important.
  • Go back and evaluate your successes and failures in recruiting.
  • Constantly change your tactics.
  • Most importantly listen intently for any problems.

Advice for instructors.

  • Start early with correcting attitudes and incompetence.
  • Begin early with discussing the challenges of training and helping them realize their goal.
  • Let applicants know up front the percent of pilots who actually make it through training.
  • There are hundreds of other pilots waiting to take your job.
  • Collateral damage happens; don’t feel as if the situation is your fault.
  • I know we all feel special but remember this humbling fact: If you are in the cockpit and can no longer fly it takes only a few hours to replace you as a pilot.

ACP122 Why Pilot Salaries Don’t Coincide With A Shortage Of Pilots

If you learned anything about basic economics, you will understand the concept of “supply and demand.” When something is in short supply, the price of the item increases. This can be true for people as well as goods, but how does it work when it comes to pilot salaries when there is a shortage of eligible pilots? Today I am joined by Tom Wachowski of the Private Jet Podcast to discuss this issue, as well as some great listener email about advanced training, converting your licenses from Canadian to the United States, and the best way to clean up a logbook before an interview.

ACP103 Regionals are Hiring Are You Prepared?

ExpressJet Offers Job To Seven Polk State Aerospace Students

Welcome to episode 103 of the podcast where we give you an inside look at all aviation and aerospace careers. Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past 5 years you would never have noticed the increasing lack of qualified pilots in the pool of applicants. All the airlines both regional and major have necessitated the reduction in their hiring minimums to keep up with the demand of pilots.

For the past few years I get one question from listeners almost on a monthly basis: are the regionals really hiring and if there truly is a pilot shortage? My answer is yes and yes. There is a lack of qualified pilots. The regional airlines have recognized this and have been offering many incentives including higher pay, signing bonuses, and bonuses for finding new recruits to name a few. We are also starting to hear about more deals with the majors allowing a path directly to a larger jet.

With all this hiring and incentives to recruit pilots, you would think that you are a shoe in to get a job. My advice to you is to not get complacent during this hiring cycle. Even thought you may have heard me say that if you can fog a mirror you can get an interview with a regional airline, that doesn’t mean you will get the job. You still need to pass the interview, complete the training, and the background checks to name a few. So let’s get started with this episode and let me start with a question for you: “The regionals are hiring but are your prepared?”

Joining me today is Paul Grieco, Flight Instructor, Regional Airline Pilot, and soon to be Captain.

Regionals are Hiring Are You Prepared? Well here is how to become prepared for your upcoming job and interview:

  • Research the company and be prepared to answer why you want to work for the airline.
  • Understand your commuting options.
  • What are the current stock prices and financial results.
  • Know recent announcements in the news.
  • Know the upper management and the person who might be at your interviews such as the Chief Pilot or head of personnel.
  • Do you have the information or Gouge on the interview?
  • Have you practiced for the interview?
  • What technical information do you need to know?
  • Can you pass a ten-year background check?
  • Do you have a DUI in your background and do you understand the implications with flying to Canada?
  • Disclose all information.
  • Can you remember technical details about the last plane you flew?
  • Know your IFR procedures inside and out. If you are an Instrument Instructor that will help.
  • Understand airline systems as much as possible.
  • Be yourself and be able to explain how you will be a positive asset to the airline.
  • Remember airlines hire future Captains, not First Officers.

ACP091 How To Avoid Complacency In Your Career

StormsAheadI am concerned about the current pilot shortage, or should I say lack of qualified pilots available for hire. This is the only industry we can’t call a pilot shortage a pilot shortage for political reasons. But that is a topic for another podcast and you can listen to my discussion by clicking on the pilot shortage tab on the homepage of this website or click on Pilot Shortage. But I digress.

My concern today is the complacency amongst many pilots when it comes to their careers. Many of you have rejoined this career after years of pursuing another job because of the recession. Having been through a few recessions in the aviation industry, I want to you understand the pursuit of an airline job or any job you truly want is a marathon and not a sprint.

During every downturn, the first people who bail out of this industry are those who were sold on an airline pilot career as being a six figure income with many days off. Although this is true later on in your career it does take years to realize this goal. Therefore, please if you are considering this as a career go into it because you enjoy the job. Don’t do it simply for the money because in the beginning you will be disappointed.

Furthermore, though many airlines may be knocking on your door and it seems if you can fog a mirror you can get a job as an airline pilot, this won’t last forever. “The worm always turns” is a saying in this industry, meaning for every uptrend in the industry there is an equal and opposite downturn. So please don’t become complacent during this current pilot shortage and we are going to show you how.

We discuss:

  • How To Avoid Complacency In Your Career
  • Why you should plan for the worst and hope for the best.
  • Why you should work on your credentials first.
  • Why there are ups and downs in the airline industry.
  • How to prepare yourself and stay hungry even during the current job market.

Scholarship Of The Week:

AOPA Noe-Singer Flight Training Scholarship $12,000

This scholarship is offered through the AOPA flight training scholarships program in hopes of expanding the pilot population by helping an individual who has a definite interest in learning how to fly, however, would be unable to without the extra funds from this scholarship.

Larry Noe, a Bonanza G36 owner, and an instrument-rated commercial pilot recognized the need to assist students who have a financial need and strong desire to complete flight training. His desire is for students to use this scholarship to begin an aviation related career track, or fly recreationally as he does.
