From YouTube:

  • I am planning to become a pilot in the near future. But I  am planning on getting a degree first. Which degree would you suggest between B.Sc Aeronautical Science (3yrs)  and B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering  (4 yrs)
  • What school did you go to become a pilot? And how much did it cost?
  • I am getting out of the military soon and will have my associate’s degree completed in 3 more months. Your advice is exactly what I needed to hear! Would you recommend I begin my flight training ASAP or focus on my bachelor’s?

Listener Mail:

Hi Carl,

Big fan of the show listening from Canada!

I’m currently a second-year student in an Aviation degree program where you study for a Bachelor of Commerce while at the same time completing a Commercial Pilot License, Multi-Engine, and group 1 Instrument Rating while also qualifying to write the Air Transport Pilot License exam at the end.

I’m deciding between finishing this 4-year program to earn by bachelor’s degree or switching to a 2-year aviation diploma program at the same flight school where you earn the same ratings but instead of a bachelor’s you earn a diploma in Aviation Technology and a certification in Aviation Safety Management & Crew Resource Management.

As for my question, if my goal is to make it to a big airline one day, do one of these options fare better than the other, or do they stand with a similar value in terms of the likeliness of getting hired?

With the upcoming shortage of pilots would it really matter?

I know the degree would be better to fall back on in the case I lost my medical but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Cheers.

Talking Points:

Moncton Canada is one of my favorite cities.

Group 1 –This type of instrument rating is given when the flight test is completed in a multi-engine plane.

Never plan for a shortage or a downturn. Plan for your career.

Flight time is #1 and Degree is #2.

BS is better for both a job at a larger airline with much competition and also for your future in case there is a downturn in the industry.

ACP247 Aircraft Dispatcher Course at Polk State College

Aircraft Dispatch Course

Aircraft Dispatcher Course at Polk State College – ACP247. Welcome to the inspirational, informational, and transparent aviation careers podcast. If you have questions, comments, inspirational stories, or announcements please write us at feedback@aviationcareerspodcast.com

The Aircraft Dispatcher Certification Program launched in February in direct response to the increasing need for aircraft dispatchers and is the only program of its kind in Florida west of I-95, serving as an attractive opportunity for those interested in the aviation industry due to the accessibility, affordability, and quality of Polk State and its Aerospace Program.

More than 30 employers nationally are actively seeking dispatcher candidates, and with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projecting airline traffic to double in the next 20 years, employment opportunities will only continue to increase. For the 160,000 airline pilots nationwide in 2017, there were only 21,000 aircraft dispatchers.

Today we are visiting the Polk State College Aerospace to discuss the Aircraft Dispatcher Certification Program. The Aircraft Dispatcher Certification Program at Polk State College provides an accelerated path to a reward aviation career as an FAA Aircraft Dispatcher. The program is FAA-approved and offers all the training needed to prepare students for the required FAA knowledge and practical tests.

This program consists of 200 hours of instruction offered in an intense, accelerated format of daily meetings over as short as a five-week period at the Lakeland-Linder International Airport in Lakeland, Florida.

Students who successfully complete the training program and obtain their FAA Dispatcher Certificate can articulate their certification as college credit in our Professional Pilot and Aerospace Administration degree programs, providing additional value and enhanced career opportunities.

With me today to discuss the Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate Program is Adam Aboueid, Michelle Byroads, and John Ford.
