Duane Moorer Scholarship

Purpose:

The OBAP Duane Moorer Scholarship was established to provide graduating high school seniors or those enrolled in an aerospace program with the financial support needed to continue education towards careers in aviation.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduating high school senior or enrolled in an aerospace program with a GPA greater than or equal to 2.5.
  • Participate as a volunteer in the Organization of Black Airline Professionals.
  • Participation in the OBAP Flight Academy in the past 3 years is required.

Value:

$2,000.00

Application Submission Process and Completion Date:

Qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as listed below, are invited to submit a formal application no later than June 3, 2016 in order to be considered for the OBAP Duane Moorer Scholarship.. Applicants must submit:

  • An application
  • Copy of official transcript
  • 250 word essay on “What is the importance of giving back?”
  • 2 letters of recommendation, one of which must have a statement of fact from an OBAP member describing your volunteer work in the organization
  • Submit an application for an alternate OBAP scholarship (see website below for link to all scholarships)
  • Submit a photograph by July 1st

History/Background:

The late Captain Duane “Tony” Moorer was a pilot for the United Parcel Service (UPS), where he enjoyed a distinguished career that lasted nineteen years.

He cultivated his craft and love of aviation as a pilot and logistics officer for the United States Marine Corps. His educational background includes a Bachelors of Science degree in Aerospace Technology from Indiana State University in 1982. In civilian life, Tony was also a Flight Instructor, Founder/Owner of Moorer Aviation Academy (a FAR-141 Flight Training School); and Midwest Atlantic (a Residential Construction Company).

As a member of The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP), Tony was dedicated to inspiring at-risk youth and young adults to aim high despite their economic status and/or social background. Tony always greeted people with a smile and a few witty words. He has logged over 10,000 hours of flight time flying both 757/767 jetliner.
